Men’s tennis haircut

09.07.2024

At first, men’s tennis haircuts were worn by tennis players – the hair did not interfere during the game, allowing them to concentrate on the ball. Today this hairstyle is one of the most popular in our barbershop in Vienna among men of different ages.

Varieties of tennis hairstyles and who is suitable for a haircut

  1. “Hedgehog” – short temples and slightly longer hair on the crown, visually elongates a round face. This version of tennis may be similar to the boxing and half-boxing haircut, but it is still slightly different from it.
  2. “Beaver” – temples and the back of the head below zero, 2-3 cm on the top of the head, reduces the elongated face.
  3. “Men’s square” – the same short length all over the head, gives rigor.
  4. “Youth tennis” – elongated strands on the top of the head (up to 5 cm), which allows for different styling.

Tennis haircut technique

The “Tennis” haircut technique is distinguished by its simplicity and clarity of steps, which are easy to master even by a novice hairdresser. Here are the main steps.

Preparation of tools

To perform the “Tennis” haircut, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • Clipper – with nozzles of different sizes to create smooth transitions between hair lengths.
  • Scissors for threading – used to soften transitions and give the haircut a natural look.
  • Straight razor or trimmer – for final correction and creation of clear lines on the temples and back of the head.
  • Comb – for dividing hair into sections and straightening strands.
  • Spray with water – for moisturizing the hair, which facilitates the cutting process and allows you to better control the length.

Hair preparation

Before you start cutting your hair, you should carefully prepare it:

  • Hair washing – hair is thoroughly washed with shampoo to remove dirt and excess sebum. It also helps make the hair more manageable for cutting.
  • Drying hair – after washing, dry hair with a towel, leaving it slightly damp. Wet hair is easier to cut and allows you to better control the length and shape of your hairstyle.

These preparatory steps will ensure high-quality results and comfort for the client.

A haircut

Start from the temples and back of the head, using a clipper with a short attachment (3-6 mm), moving from bottom to top for a smooth transition. The same attachment is used on the back of the head to create a straight line. Then a medium-length attachment (1-2 cm) is used for the crown, cutting the hair to 5 cm from the central part to the edges. The transition from long hair at the crown to short hair at the temples and back of the head is created using intermediate-sized attachments or thinning scissors.

Adjustment of shape and details

After the main haircut, the temples and back of the head are adjusted with a razor or trimmer to achieve clear and neat lines. If necessary, you can use thinning scissors to soften the transitions and make the haircut look natural.

Final styling

Once the cut is complete, the hair is lightly moistened again to prepare it for styling. Depending on the client’s preferences, various styling products can be used to shape and fix the hairstyle:

  • Gel – provides strong hold and shine, suitable for creating clear and smooth hairstyles.
  • Wax – adds texture and flexibility, allowing you to create more natural and dynamic styling.
  • Balm – softens hair and adds light shine, ideal for natural and relaxed styles.

Laying options

The “Tennis” haircut is easy to style and opens up many possibilities for experimentation:

  • Retro style slicked back hair creates an elegant and classic look. For this, a gel is used that gives the hair smoothness and shine.
  • A mohawk with long bangs is a modern and daring style. The bangs are laid up and fixed with wax or gel to add volume and durability.
  • Loose styling – hair is styled using wax to create a textured and natural look.
  • Slightly tousled hair creates a dynamic and youthful look. To do this, use a small amount of gel or balm to give the hair shape and lightness.

These styling techniques allow you to adapt a men’s tennis haircut to any style and occasion, providing individuality and expressiveness to the look.

Care and styling

Caring for a Tennis haircut is easy, but you can use styling gel to make it attractive. For example, you can comb your bangs back in a retro style, giving them volume, or use gel to create a mohawk on long bangs. Men’s haircut “Tennis” can create a presentable and strict appearance, making a man more confident.
