Stages of Beard Growth and Ways to Speed Up the Process

15.08.2025

Every man who decides to grow a beard eventually faces the same questions: why does it grow unevenly, how to speed up the process, and what exactly happens to facial hair during different stages. To understand how to care for your beard properly and achieve predictable results, it’s important to learn about its biological growth phases and the factors influencing the rate of density development. The barbers in our male barbershop explain the phases of beard growth and what affects the speed of its development.

Beard Growth Phases

A beard, just like the hair on your head, goes through several development stages. Each has its own characteristics and duration, which determine the appearance and density of facial hair.

The first and longest stage is anagen. During this period, active hair growth occurs and can last from several months to two years. Up to 80% of the total beard mass is formed during this time. Hair becomes thicker, stronger, and darker if properly maintained and supported with the necessary nutrients.

The next stage is catagen. This is a short resting phase that lasts up to two weeks. At this point, hair growth stops, the follicle gradually detaches from the blood vessels that feed it, and prepares for the next stage. Although brief, this phase plays an important role in the natural hair renewal cycle.

The final stage is telogen. It lasts around two to three months. During this period, hair no longer grows and will soon fall out, making room for new hair. This process is completely natural, and moderate beard shedding should not be a cause for concern. After telogen ends, the growth cycle restarts.

How to Speed Up Beard Growth

The speed of beard growth depends on many factors: genetics, hormonal levels, nutrition, and care. However, there are methods that help activate growth and make the hair thicker and healthier.
First of all, pay attention to your diet. The body needs vitamins, minerals, and proteins so that follicles can function properly. A lack of nutrients slows growth and makes hair brittle.

To stimulate beard growth, follow these recommendations:

  • eat properly — include more proteins, nuts, and fish in your diet, and reduce fatty foods and alcohol to a minimum;
  • take vitamins A, B, C, and D, as well as minerals such as zinc and iron;
  • avoid stress, as high cortisol levels reduce testosterone production;
  • stay physically active — regular training positively affects hormone balance and accelerates hair growth;
  • use oils, creams, and light facial massage to stimulate blood circulation and nourish hair follicles.

Even if all recommendations are followed, do not expect an instant result. Beard growth is gradual, and each body needs its own time to activate all follicles and achieve the desired density.

Conclusion

Growing a beard is a process that requires patience and a systematic approach. Understanding its growth phases helps you take better care of your facial hair and not worry if it grows slower at certain stages. Maintaining a proper diet, taking vitamins, staying physically active, and following regular care routines will make your beard not only dense but also healthy. The key is persistence and allowing nature to do its job.
